They may not answer right away or at all, but you never know until you try!
Y-you're so good to me... [ he sniffles, and there's shuffling, like he's already picking up the phone and getting ready for bed. ]
...Please rest as well, okay? I'll look forward to the next time we talk. And soon-- face to face, right? Mm, that will give me something very nice to look forward to.
O— okay!! I’m going, so— just hang on and get cozy too, okay—?
[ the phone is all but tossed aside and there’s the sound of Abel tripping over the chair and muttering under his breath... a few minutes of muffled shuffling and action as he obligingly gets his duck patterned pajamas on, washes his face, brushes his teeth... mom look he’s being such a good boy!!! ]
[ and Doll would be a saint to put up with all this, but let’s be real, it’s Doll so they probably would. soon, the phone is being picked up again and the mattress gives a freak of protest as he flops on the bed ]
—-Alright!! [ sounds so excited........ ] I am squeaky clean and very ready~! Y- you’re still there, right...?
[ Doll... you are the very first person to tuck Abel in (in spirit) and read him a bedtime story. there's some kind of honorary trophy in the mail. ]
O~kay. [ he gives a sing-song reply, and there's the sound of the blankets being situated Just So to get nice and comfy. ]
Oooh, these are some strong choices... How am I supposed to pick just one?! Ahh... [ thinking sounds... ] --Okay! How about the Silver Princess? That sounds like the kind of story that will give me good dreams.
[ ...wow Doll. you're really doing this. he can't believe it alksjdf ]
[He's laughing but still! He's taking this very seriously.]
You can always come back another night and pick another one!
[He means it. And...oh. Page turning.]
Once upon a time, there was a kingdom, in a faraway land. There, there was a king and queen, and they were blessed with a child-a princess. This princess was different from all the others not because she was a princess- but because she had beautiful hair, made of silver....
[It's a very quiet shush. Doll, the very nice babysitter!]
You can be the princess if you want...now, the Princess had a very serious problem. People would see her hair, but not her! People would look at her hair, and admire it, and sometimes they tried to touch it! And there was even one or two people who tried to pull it!
And that simply would not do. So the Princess decided to do something about it!
[ okay he's TOTALLY the princess. but he won't say it, because he was told to shh and he is an obedient child. ...man. MAN, he's an obedient MAN. ]
[ there's a little gasp. oh no!! this poor princess, doomed to a life of loneliness because of her gorgeous hair... he's hanging on to every word with bated breath. WHAT DID SHE DO?! ]
So the Princess packed up her things, bid farewell to her parents, and she went off, into the Woods, where there was a Witch, most kind and helpful.
And the Witch looked waved her hands over bubbling stews, mumbled and jumbled! And she told the Princess that she, the witch, could not change her. But! She could try asking the Wizard in the Tower, at the Edge of the Woods.
[ okay, this is a bedtime story, and you're supposed to be listening to these to make you sleepy and give you pleasant dreams! so-- Abel diligently (if belatedly) clicks the light off quietly as he can and closes his eyes. ]
[ if Doll is going to take this seriously, he has to give them their due. ]
[ he can picture it; a fairy tale princess straight out of the heavy books he would read to Caterina before she tired of them, drawn with love and care upon well-worn pages. it makes him feel nostalgic and he relaxes despite himself. ]
[ the princess in his mind's eye suddenly has blonde hair in long curls and ash colored eyes. it doesn't detract from the tale at all-- no... he is even more immersed!! oh, oh. their little princess is quite brave going off on her own... will the wizard be able to help her? he can't wait to hear what happens next... ]
[And it's a good story too! In Doll's opinion at least. He always enjoyed this story!]
The Woods were big, and it was dark; sometimes it was very scary for the Princess, who had lived in the castle all her life. But she didn't want to live a life of where she was always wanted for her hair and not herself!
And so she managed to find the Tower and the Wizard. She told the Wizard her plight, and he waved his mighty instruments, his familiar did a dance, and his bird sung for a lark.
And the Wizard shook their head, saddened that he could not help her. But he told her that on the full moon, the three goddesses of the Moon would be at the Lake, and they could do many things beyond what humans could.
So after a nights rest, and some helpful directions, the Princess went.
[ little princess Caterina trekking valiantly through the forest in his head; he can see her big eyes peering through the trees and the brush. there would be that look of stubborn determination in her eyes that she had never outgrown. he can see her in the Tower, hoping against hope for this mysterious Wizard (who looked suspiciously like Professor in his imagination, suddenly) to solve her problems... ]
[ but of course he couldn't...! the story couldn't end there. ]
[ oh, my. Moon Goddesses--?! this just gets more exciting by the moment... surely a goddess would be able to help his little princess, right...? ]
It was a long walk for the Princess; her feet had become sore, and she was hungry, for all the Wizard gave her food to eat. She was very lucky that bandits had not found her. But maybe, just maybe, there was something the Witch and the Wizard gave her that helped keep her safe.
Finally, after a very long day, she came to the Lake. It was very beautiful, and she cooled her feet in the cool waters. But she had to stay awake; if she didn't, who knew when the goddesses would come next?
So the Princess sat in the cold, and the dark, waiting for them to come.
And they did! Three of them, all beautiful, singing and playing harps to entertain themselves while on solid ground.
The Princess came to them, and fell to her knees.
"Oh Goddesses! I have seen the Witch of the Woods, and the Wizard of the Tower, but they could not help me. Please, oh please, change my hair, so it may be as normal as normal be!"
And the three sister Goddesses looked to her, and they said...
[ his poor little world-weary princess...!! he can see her dress torn at the edges from walking through brush and bramble, imagine her tired face despite her determination... it's enough to melt anyone's heart!!
but her stamina isn't being tested for naught--!! so the goddesses were real... her faith and effort was rewarded. Abel is waiting, almost holding his breath for the answer!! what will they say?! is she finally going to get her happy ending...?! ]
[Princess is working very hard! Doll smiles on their side of the screen, before they continue.]
"Fear not, little princess; we see your heart. It is filled with determination to change your fate. You have changed yourself."
And when the princess looked in the Lake, she could see that her hair was no longer silver, but blonde! And the princess nearly cried from her joy.
But she was strong, and she bowed to the goddesses, before going back, through the flat lands, through the woods, back to her home, where she was reunited with her family.
And there she lived, making changes for the good of her people, and becoming known as the Beloved Queen.
[ ohhh... it's as if the story has come full circle. Caterina really was the princess all along, he knew it!! Doll can't see it, but he's smiling to himself on the other end of the phone, too.
a beloved queen, hm... he can only hope the princess he left back at home gets such a fairy tale ending. ]
...Wow, she really got her wish in the end...! That's so nice... I bet she's happy. [ does he sound sleepy? he sounds sleepy. ]
[ they get a little mumble of farewell; he clumsily finds the end call button and lets them go. what a treasure Doll is... lulling manchildren priests off to sleep like this!! Abel will have nice dreams of a certain blonde-haired Cardinal back in the fields of Milan tonight, her weaving daisy chains for his hair in so much sunshine.
